The A-Frame Concept was developed in an effort to maximize the overall r-values of a home (and thereby lessen the energy loads and costs). Roofs typically have a significantly higher r-value than walls. Therefore the A-Frame concept, with proportionally greater roof area, became the solution.
A roof assembly with a high r-value, along with frost-protected shallow footings and an insulated slab, provide an economical approach to energy efficiency. The roof also provides a location for solar panels.
The roof enlivens the interior space (see rendering in slideshow above). Skylights that are controlled by motorized operators provide natural light and ventilation, further reducing lighting and HVAC loads.
